Oborevwori Advocates Strong Family Values As Delta Lawmaker, Nwaobi Unveils Book on Marriage

By Peter Ogege

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has emphasized the need to strengthen family values, love, peace, unity and bonding, describing them as essential ingredients for sustainable development beyond physical infrastructure.

The governor made the remarks during the unveiling of a book titled “A Guide to a Successful Marriage”, authored by the Leader of the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, in Asaba.

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme, Oborevwori said societies founded on stable homes would naturally enjoy greater harmony, productivity and security.

“Marriage is the bedrock of every stable society. When marriages thrive, families become stronger, society becomes more peaceful, and the state prospers,” he said.

The governor noted that several social challenges confronting society — ranging from juvenile delinquency to emotional distress and some aspects of insecurity — could be linked to the breakdown of family structures.

Commending Nwaobi for the intellectual contribution, Oborevwori described the book as a timely intervention that would provide guidance and practical wisdom for intending couples and those already married.

“This book is a public good. It offers insight, guidance and wisdom for people preparing for marriage and for those already on the journey,” he added.

The Chairman of the occasion and immediate past Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, represented by his wife, Dame Edit Okowa, also praised the author for what she described as a meaningful contribution to the sustenance of marriages.

She expressed concern over the rising divorce rate, stating that the ratio of divorce had increased from 1.8 per cent to 2.9 per cent, with Nigeria ranking 11th globally in divorce cases.

According to her, major causes of divorce include infidelity, incompatibility, family interference and domestic violence. She added that divorce cases among women accounted for 62 per cent, while men represented 38 per cent.

She urged couples to embrace love, mutual respect and openness in order to strengthen their unions.

Also speaking, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, who represented by the Chief Launcher, High Chief Kestin Pondi, described the book as timely and valuable to the institution of marriage.

“This book will inspire couples, strengthen family bonds and promote unity in homes,” he said.

The author, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, said the inspiration for the book was divine and aimed at helping couples and intending couples to view marriage as a blessing rather than a burden. He disclosed that the publication also formed part of activities marking his 21st wedding anniversary.

During a panel discussion, the book reviewer and former Permanent Secretary, Mr. Okey Offili, alongside Dr. Maria Okocha and Rev. Fr. Charles Uganwa, examined the author’s concept of a successful marriage.

They agreed that conflict was inevitable in every marriage but stressed that the manner in which disagreements are resolved determines the stability and longevity of the union.

The highlight of the ceremony was the formal unveiling of the book and the cutting of the anniversary cake.

Among dignitaries present were the Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Arthur Akpowowo, members of the House, commissioners, senior government officials, and the Obi of Issele-Uku Kingdom, Nduka Ezeagwuna, among others.
