The Nigeria Police Force has assured the public that justice will be served following the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, after police operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command responded to information from Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway.
The suspect was reportedly apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel said to contain a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
Police said that while officers were trying to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in violation of police regulations, leading to the suspect’s death.
Following the incident, the leadership of the Force ordered the immediate transfer of the officer and members of his team to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they are expected to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary disciplinary measures and possible prosecution.
The Inspector-General of Police also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that the matter would be handled in accordance with the law.
The Force reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against extra-judicial killings, abuse of authority, and any form of misconduct capable of eroding public confidence in the police.
