POLICE ASSAULT: Abaniwonda Condemns Act, Orders Arrest, Detention of Officers

Delta State Police Command has commenced disciplinary action against some police officers who were caught on camera, assaulting a young man near the Asaba Specialist Hospital on Sunday, 27th July, 2025.

The action followed widespread outrage over the viral footage, which drew sharp condemnation from members of the public and forced a swift response from the police authority.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Edafe Bright, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, was said to have acted immediately upon receiving the video by ordering the identification and arrest of the officers involved.

The men were said to have since been detained at the Command headquarters, and procedures underway for their orderly room trial, while their team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), has been issued a formal query.

CP Abaniwonda condemned the act, describing it as unacceptable and not reflective of the values of the Delta State Command.

He assured the public that the erring officers would be punished in line with the provisions of the Police Act and regulations.

“It is not in the character of the Command to trample on the rights of citizens or assault members of the public. Such conduct will not be tolerated under my leadership”, he stated.

The Police Commissioner further urged officers to maintain professionalism and uphold the rights of all Nigerians as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution.

He also appealed to the public to remain calm, assuring them that justice would be served.
