Former President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has paid a heartfelt tribute to his late predecessor, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, marking 16 years since his death and celebrating what he described as a legacy of integrity, humility, and commitment to national service.
In a reflective message released on the anniversary, Jonathan described Yar’Adua as “a dear hero, an icon of integrity, a selfless patriot,” adding that he was privileged to have worked closely with him, not just as a subordinate, but as “a brother and worthy partner in service.”
Jonathan emphasized their shared vision for a better Nigeria, noting that both leaders were united in their desire to build “a Nigeria where justice is not a slogan, but a lived reality for every citizen.”
He praised Yar’Adua’s leadership style, highlighting his deep respect for democratic principles and the rule of law. According to Jonathan, “Yar’Adua was a man of quiet but profound conviction who believed that the strength of a country is measured by its commitment to the rule of law and the sanctity of the ballot.”
The former president also commended Yar’Adua’s humility in office, stating that he “did not just lead; he served with a humility that is rare in the corridors of power,” often prioritizing national stability over personal or political interests.
Jonathan further pointed to Yar’Adua’s contributions to peace-building as a defining aspect of his legacy, noting that the late leader demonstrated “the courage to admit flaws and the sincerity to fix them” as part of his approach to governance.
Calling on current and future leaders to emulate Yar’Adua’s values, Jonathan stressed that “leadership is a sacred trust” and that sustainable progress must be grounded in transparency, accountability, and genuine concern for citizens.
“As we remember this ‘Gentleman President,’ let us rededicate ourselves to the worthy causes he pursued with such passion,” Jonathan urged.
He concluded with prayers for the repose of Yar’Adua’s soul, asking Almighty Allah to grant him eternal rest in Al-Jannah Firdaus.
