Fearless journalist and publisher, Fejiro Oliver, was on Thursday arrested in Abuja in what many describe as a dramatic clampdown on press freedom.
Oliver, who runs the investigative platform Secret Reporters, was reportedly taken from his office in Garki by operatives of the Force Intelligence Department (FID). He was later sighted at the FID headquarters before being quietly moved to the airport and placed on an evening flight bound for Asaba, Delta State.
Insider sources allege that the arrest may have been influenced by Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, who has frequently come under fire from Oliver’s scathing reports. The journalist has consistently accused the administration of financial recklessness and of ignoring rising police intimidation of citizens.
This is not Oliver’s first brush with detention. Years ago, he spent time in Ikoyi Prison, Lagos, following publications that ruffled powerful feathers, before eventually regaining his freedom.
Through Secret Reporters, Oliver has built a reputation for bold investigative journalism, exposing alleged corruption and misuse of public office across Nigeria. His style has won him admirers among the public but also powerful adversaries within political and security circles.
As of the time of filing this report, the police have not officially stated the reason for Oliver’s arrest, and the Delta State Government has also remained silent. The secrecy surrounding the operation has further fueled speculation about its legality and the true motives behind the action.
