2026 WCQ: Rohr Eyes Victory as Benin Republic Face Super Eagles in Uyo

Head coach of the Benin Republic national football team, Gernot Rohr, has expressed his determination to lead the Cheetahs to victory against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in today’s World Cup qualifying clash.

Speaking during a media parley ahead of the encounter at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, the German tactician said his team’s mission is clear — to secure all three points.

Rohr, who managed the Super Eagles from 2016 to 2021 and guided them to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, described the fixture as a “special but emotional” one.

“I have many friends in Nigeria, including some players who were brought into the national team during my time as coach,” Rohr said. “However, this isn’t a time for emotions or memories. The focus is on a very important game, and we are here for a result.”

The 72-year-old coach, who is on the verge of achieving another World Cup qualification — this time with Benin Republic — stressed the importance of the match to his team’s campaign.

“The game against Nigeria is like a final for us. We have a great opportunity to move closer to our World Cup dream,” he stated.

Rohr also took a moment to reminisce on his successful stint with Nigeria. “My time with the Super Eagles was wonderful, especially qualifying for the 2018 World Cup with two games to spare. But that is now history — I’m focused on a new challenge with Benin Republic.”

The highly anticipated clash between Benin Republic and Nigeria is scheduled for Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
