Reactions have continued to pour in following the tragic death of a Nigerian Army officer, Lieutenant Samson Haruna, who reportedly died after sustaining severe burns when his wife allegedly set him ablaze during a domestic altercation at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The deceased officer, a medical doctor serving as the Regimental Medical Officer (RMO) with the 6 Battalion, was said to have been doused with petrol by his wife, identified as Mrs. Haruna, during a heated argument that spiralled out of control.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred barely eight months into their marriage. Lt. Haruna was immediately rushed to the Military Reference Section (MRS) within the barracks, where he was initially stabilised before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) for advanced medical care.
Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, the officer succumbed to his injuries, prompting widespread reactions across social media and the general public, who condemned the increasing rate of domestic violence in marriages.
Many commentators described the incident as “deeply heartbreaking,” urging couples to seek peaceful resolutions to conflicts rather than resorting to violence.
“Before your anger pushes you to take a life, remember that your partner is someone’s son, brother, or friend. Violence leaves scars that justice cannot heal. Marriage should never be a battlefield.”
“No matter how much you love someone, if they show any sign of violence—whether in words or deeds walk away. Love should not cost your life.”
Others lamented the short duration of the union, with one commenting:
“Only eight months of marriage and a promising life has been wasted. This is truly devastating.”
Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.
