President Tinubu Declares 9th National Youth Games Open in Asaba, Promises Greater Investment in Sports

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially declared the 9th National Youth Games open in Asaba, Delta State, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to investing in sports as a tool for youth development and national unity.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Public Communication and former Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare, the President described the Youth Games as a vital platform for discovering emerging sports talents who go on to represent Nigeria on national and international stages.

“Sports have remained one of the strongest tools of unity in our country,” President Tinubu said, commending the leadership of the National Sports Commission. He praised its Chairman, Shehu Dikko, and Director General, Bukola Olopade, as capable and experienced figures poised to advance Nigeria’s sports development agenda.

President Tinubu also expressed appreciation to the Delta State Government and its people for hosting the Games, recognizing the state’s track record in nurturing outstanding athletes who have brought glory to the nation.

Speaking on behalf of the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly emphasized the state’s ongoing dedication to youth empowerment and investment in sports infrastructure.

“Today marks a special moment for Delta State as we host athletes, officials, and visitors in Asaba,” he said. “This event is not just about competition — it’s a celebration of youth, unity, and Nigeria’s bright sporting future.”

He reiterated Delta’s reputation as Nigeria’s “home of sports” and pledged that the state would continue to uphold its legacy of excellence and hospitality.

Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, noted that the commission, under the leadership of Shehu Dikko, had made significant progress. He described the Games as a crucial platform for identifying and nurturing young athletes who will go on to become national ambassadors in global competitions.

Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee and Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, assured participants and visitors of a memorable experience.

He highlighted the quality of the sports facilities and the extensive preparations made to ensure the smooth running of the event, which features over 6,000 young athletes from across the country.

The opening ceremony featured vibrant performances, including calisthenics, music, and a parade of athletes from participating states in their sports kits. Despite the energetic displays and festive atmosphere, the turnout was noticeably low, with only about a third of the 23,000-capacity stadium occupied.

The ceremony concluded with a symbolic hoisting of the national flag, the host state’s flag, and the official flag of the 9th National Youth Games by uniformed military personnel.

The Games are expected to run for several days, offering a stage for Nigeria’s next generation of sports stars to shine.
