Democracy Day Celebration Remind Leaders That Nigerians Deserve Good Governance – UCHEKA

The Publisher of Path-Way News, Mr. Victor Ucheka, has stated that the annual celebration of Democracy Day should serve as a reminder to leaders at all levels of government that the primary purpose of leadership is to provide good governance and improve the welfare of the people.

Ucheka made this assertion in a statement made available to journalists in Asaba while commemorating this year’s Democracy Day. He noted that June 12 is not only a day to celebrate Nigeria’s democratic journey but also an opportunity for leaders to reflect on their responsibilities and renew their commitment to the principles of democracy.

According to him, democracy goes beyond conducting elections and transferring power from one administration to another. He stressed that the true essence of democracy lies in the ability of government to deliver meaningful development, protect the rights of citizens, and create an enabling environment for economic growth and social progress.

“Democracy Day should remind our leaders that the citizens deserve good governance characterized by transparency, accountability, fairness, and sustainability. The people have entrusted their leaders with authority and resources, and it is only right that such trust is rewarded with quality leadership and tangible development,” he said.

Ucheka emphasized that many Nigerians continue to face economic hardship, unemployment, insecurity, and inadequate social amenities. He therefore urged governments at all levels to prioritize policies and programmes that will create jobs, stimulate economic growth, empower women and youths, improve healthcare delivery, strengthen the education sector, and enhance the security of lives and property.

He further stated that the nation’s greatest asset remains its youthful population, adding that deliberate investments in youth empowerment, skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, and education would significantly reduce poverty and unemployment while promoting national development.

Speaking on the role of women in nation-building, Ucheka called for increased opportunities for women in governance, business, and leadership positions. He noted that empowering women is essential for sustainable development and economic prosperity.

The media entrepreneur also urged public office holders to see Democracy Day as a period of sober reflection and self-evaluation. According to him, leaders should use the occasion to assess their performance, engage with citizens, listen to their concerns, and take practical steps toward addressing the challenges confronting the nation.

“Leadership is not about occupying positions of authority; it is about service to humanity. The success of any government should be measured by the positive impact it has on the lives of the people. Citizens deserve leaders who are responsive, responsible, and committed to delivering on their promises,” he added.

Ucheka further called on Nigerians to remain patriotic, law-abiding, and actively involved in the democratic process. He urged citizens to hold elected officials accountable while contributing their quota to national development through peaceful participation, constructive engagement, and respect for democratic institutions.

He expressed optimism that Nigeria can achieve greater progress if leaders place the interests of the people above personal and political considerations. He maintained that with sincere leadership, accountability, and collective commitment, the country can overcome its challenges and build a more prosperous future for all.

“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us remember that democracy is not merely a system of government but a covenant between leaders and the people. It is a covenant that demands accountability, inclusiveness, justice, and service. Only when leaders genuinely serve the people can the dividends of democracy be felt by all citizens,” Ucheka concluded.
