Delta Senators Launch U-19 Unifier Cup to Foster Youth Unity, Discover Football Talent

A new era of grassroots football development is set to unfold in Delta State following the official launch of the Delta Senators’ Unifier Cup, an Under-19 football tournament, in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area.

The initiative, spearheaded by the state’s three senators — Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, Ned Nwoko, and Ede Dafinone — is designed to unite young people across the state through the power of football.

Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, Special Assistant to Senator Joel-Onowakpo, Onoriode Omagufi, emphasized that the competition goes beyond sports, describing it as a platform for unity and social integration.

“This tournament is about bringing together young people from different communities, fostering unity, and creating bonds that will last a lifetime,” Omagufi stated.

He noted that the tournament will also serve as a springboard for budding football talents seeking professional opportunities.

“We are creating an avenue for these young players to showcase their skills. Scouts and agents will be watching, and exceptional talents could secure opportunities with clubs both locally and internationally,” he added.

According to Omagufi, the competition will span ten days, featuring teams from all local government areas in Delta State. He explained that zonal qualifiers would be held across the three senatorial districts before progressing to knockout rounds.

“The structure ensures inclusiveness and competitiveness, giving every part of the state a fair chance to participate and excel,” he said.

He further assured that the Local Organising Committee is putting measures in place to deliver a seamless and impactful tournament.

“We are committed to organizing a competition that will not only entertain but also contribute meaningfully to youth development in Delta State,” Omagufi noted.

While the official draw is yet to be conducted, the opening ceremony is scheduled for April 17 at the Southern Delta University Stadium in Ozoro, which will also host the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final.

Zonal matches for Delta North and Delta Central are expected to take place at the Kwale Stadium and Sapele Stadium respectively, setting the stage for what organizers describe as a landmark football event in the state.
