Bayelsa Govt. Officially Announces Death of Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo

Bayelsa State has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo. He passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at the age of 60.

According to an official statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Hon. (Mrs.) Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, the Deputy Governor collapsed while heading to a scheduled meeting within his office. He was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where doctors later confirmed his death.

The state government described his passing as a painful and profound loss to Bayelsa and the nation. Senator Ewhrudjakpo, a former Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, also represented Bayelsa West in the Senate before being elected Deputy Governor in 2020.

Governor Douye Diri extended heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s wife, Barr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Ewhrudjakpo, their children, the Ewhrudjakpo family, the Ofoni Federated Community, former Governor Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, and the people of Bayelsa State.

In honour of the late Deputy Governor, Governor Diri has declared a three-day State Mourning beginning Friday, December 12, 2025. All flags across the state are to be flown at half-mast.

The statement added that the Governor prayed for God’s comfort for the bereaved family and the entire state.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo is remembered as an accomplished public servant who dedicated his career to the development and progress of Bayelsa State.
