Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has expressed deep disappointment after Nigeria failed to reach the Intercontinental playoffs, following a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo in Rabat on Sunday.
Nigeria began the game on a promising note, taking an early lead in the third minute when Frank Onyeka’s deflected strike found the net. However, DR Congo hit back in the 34th minute as Meschak Elia pounced on slack defending to draw level.
Despite a bright start, the Super Eagles struggled for control, with the Leopards dominating the second half and extra time, creating several chances but failing to capitalise against a visibly tired Nigerian side.
The match went to penalties, where Jerome Akor, Bruno Onyemaechi and Chidera Ejuke converted their kicks for Nigeria. Nwabali kept hope alive with two brilliant saves, but Semi Ajayi’s miss in sudden death sealed the Super Eagles’ fate.
Nwabali later took to Instagram to apologise to supporters, describing the defeat as painful.
“Painful! We all did our best for the badge though our best wasn’t enough. I was once a fan and understand how it feels giving you a disappointing night. We take full responsibility,” the Chippa United shot-stopper wrote.
The result ends Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup through the African playoff route.
