Delta APC Commends Gov. Oborevwori Over ₦8.4 Billion DESOPADEC Debt Settlement

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Delta State Chapter, has commended the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for his recent approval of ₦8.4 billion for the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) to settle long-outstanding contractual debts owed to contractors between 2010 and 2023.

In a press statement issued in Asaba and signed by Valentine Onojeghuo Esq, the State Publicity Secretary of the party, the Delta APC described the Governor’s action as a “bold, commendable, and people-centered decision” that reflects his zero tolerance for indebtedness, fiscal irresponsibility, and administrative neglect.

According to the statement, the APC acknowledged that the release of the ₦8.4 billion financial intervention will not only restore confidence among contractors but also revitalize infrastructural development across the state’s oil-producing communities, where many projects had stalled for years due to lack of payment.

“The Delta APC wishes to commend His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for demonstrating uncommon political will, financial discipline, and leadership foresight by approving the release of ₦8.4 billion to DESOPADEC for the settlement of long-standing contractual debts,” the statement read.

“This gesture is a reflection of a progressive leader who understands the value of integrity in governance and the importance of meeting financial obligations as a catalyst for economic growth, investor confidence, and sustainable development.”

The party noted that by addressing inherited liabilities dating back more than a decade, Governor Oborevwori – a proud member of the APC – has shown a deep sense of responsibility and continuity in governance, demonstrating that the values of the APC are rooted in accountability, fiscal prudence, and service to the people.

The statement further emphasized that the Governor’s action is in line with his administration’s MORE Agenda, which stands for Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.

“This initiative aligns perfectly with the Governor’s MORE Agenda and with the core values of the All Progressives Congress, particularly in ensuring that governance remains people-oriented, transparent, and accountable,” the APC noted.

“By settling these debts, the Governor has not only boosted the morale of contractors who have waited for years but also rekindled public trust in the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and good governance.”

The APC also recalled that this latest intervention follows the Governor’s earlier release of ₦10 billion to the Delta State Pension Bureau to clear a substantial portion of outstanding pension arrears, as well as the settlement of promotion arrears for civil servants — actions the party described as “practical evidence of leadership anchored on empathy, equity, and administrative discipline.”

Continuing, the statement noted that such timely interventions have far-reaching positive implications for the state’s economy, as they will inject liquidity into local markets, empower contractors to re-engage workers, and accelerate the completion of vital infrastructure such as roads, schools, jetties, and water supply schemes in oil-producing communities.

“Delta APC recognizes that the Governor’s decision will significantly stimulate economic activity across the Niger Delta region, particularly in Delta’s oil-producing areas where the majority of DESOPADEC projects are located. This will, in turn, translate to better living conditions for our people and renewed confidence in the government’s sincerity of purpose.”

The Delta APC went to assured Deltans that the Oborevwori-led administration will continue to roll out policies and initiatives that promotes transparency, accountability, and sustainable development, urging citizens across political lines to rally behind the Governor’s vision for a prosperous Delta State.

“Our party believes that governance transcends partisanship. We therefore commend Governor Oborevwori for this decisive and patriotic step and urge him to sustain the momentum of responsible and people-centered governance, ensuring that every policy reflects the collective interest of all Deltans.”

The party concluded by reiterating its faith in the Governor’s capacity to lead Delta State to greater heights, stressing that his actions have continued to affirm the APC’s commitment to progressive governance rooted in service, compassion, and accountability.

“our party remains committed to supporting all efforts aimed at building a Delta State that is economically vibrant, socially stable, and development-driven. We urge all stakeholders to key into this vision and work collectively toward the advancement of our beloved state under the capable and trusted hands of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori,” the statement added.
