Warri Records First Successful Kidney Transplant at Private Hospital

Warri has recorded its first-ever successful kidney transplant following a groundbreaking procedure at Mount Horeb Hospital, Airport Road. The surgery, carried out by the Warri Transplant Group, marks a historic milestone for healthcare delivery in Delta State.

The living-donor transplant, performed by a team of local and diaspora specialists, is being hailed as a significant step toward reducing medical tourism by providing world-class treatment closer to home.

The team of nephrologists and medical professionals included the Transplant Coordinator, Dr. Jimoh Abdulmalik; Dr. Raphael Onyemekeihia; Dr. Henry Slater; Dr. Great Edema; and transplant nurse Vero Ebinum, among others.

Speaking with journalists in Warri, Dr. Onyemekeihia disclosed that both the donor and the 31-year-old recipient are in stable condition. He noted that the achievement aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, which prioritizes quality healthcare delivery for Deltans.

He emphasized the importance of stronger collaboration with the state government to create an enabling environment for advanced medical procedures such as organ transplants.
Dr. Slater and Dr. Edema also highlighted the growing burden of kidney disease in Nigeria, stressing the need for sustainable, home-grown solutions.

They commended the Delta State Government for recently reducing the cost of dialysis in public hospitals, thereby easing the financial strain on patients and their families.
According to the Warri Transplant Group, the procedure saved the patient an estimated ₦8 million compared to similar surgeries carried out in Abuja or abroad.

Expressing his gratitude, the young patient said:
“I’m happy the surgery was successful. I give thanks to God and the doctors. I urge kidney failure patients within and outside Delta State to consider Mount Horeb Hospital for treatment.”
The successful transplant is being celebrated as a beacon of hope for patients living with kidney disease in Delta and across the Niger Delta region.
