Oborevwori Flags Off N59.7bn Agbor–Uromi Flyover, Vows Safer Roads, Balanced Development

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Monday officially flagged off the construction of the N59.7 billion Agbor–Uromi Junction Flyover, describing the project as a decisive response to years of traffic congestion, accidents and economic losses at one of the state’s busiest intersections.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, the governor said the flyover was conceived to save lives and enhance economic activities within Delta State and across the Niger Delta.
“This project is not just about concrete and steel; it is about protecting lives, improving mobility and strengthening our economy,” Oborevwori said. “The Agbor/Uromi Junction has for years been a danger zone, and this intervention provides a lasting solution.”

The governor explained that the contract for the design and construction of the flyover had been awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc with a completion period of 14 months. He disclosed that the project would comprise a 1.3-kilometre flyover bridge along the Uromi–Agbor Highway, dual carriageways, ramps, roundabouts, concrete drains, kerbs and solar-powered streetlights.

Highlighting the strategic importance of the corridor, Oborevwori noted that the route serves as a major link between the Eastern and Western parts of the Niger Delta and a gateway to the North.
“Anyone travelling from Lagos to the East or from the East to the West must pass through this route. Its relevance to national commerce and transportation cannot be overstated,” he said.

He added that beyond easing traffic and reducing travel time, the project would create employment opportunities for engineers, artisans, labourers, transporters and traders throughout the construction period. Reaffirming his commitment to even development, the governor disclosed that his administration had set aside N100 billion as a special intervention fund, with N4 billion allocated to each of the 25 local government areas for infrastructure projects.

Former Governor of Delta State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, who was present at the event, described the flyover as a landmark project and commended Oborevwori for sustaining development continuity.
“This flyover is monumental and impactful. It shows a government that plans and delivers for the people,” Okowa said, while also commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms.

In his remarks, Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, described Oborevwori as a bold and hardworking leader and urged residents of Ika Nation to continue supporting the administration.

On behalf of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Mr. Frederich Weiser thanked the Delta State Government for the confidence placed in the company.
“We are committed to delivering this project to the highest standards of quality, safety and efficiency, and within the stipulated timeline,” he assured.

Other speakers, including the Chairman of Ika South Local Government, Engr. Jerry Ehiwarior, the Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr. Chiedu Ebie, traditional rulers and political leaders, described the flyover as transformative and pledged their support for the Oborevwori administration’s infrastructure agenda.
