Oborevwori Directs Police to Clamp Down on Illegal Firearms Ahead of 2027 Polls

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has ordered security agencies to decisively arrest and prosecute anyone found in possession of illegal firearms or attempting to disrupt public peace as preparations begin for the 2027 general elections.

The governor issued the directive on Tuesday in Asaba while receiving the newly posted Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Aina Adesola, and members of his management team during a courtesy visit to Government House.

Describing CP Adesola’s posting as a “homecoming,” Oborevwori said the police chief’s prior service in Delta State had equipped him with deep knowledge of the terrain and local security dynamics.

“I am particularly happy with your posting to Delta State because you understand this terrain very well,” the governor said. “You have served here before, and your impact was visible. For the few weeks you have been here, the state has remained peaceful, and we are proud of what you are doing.”

The governor attributed the prevailing calm across the state to effective collaboration among security agencies, stressing that such synergy must be sustained, especially as political activities intensify.

Recalling the security challenges before 2023, Oborevwori noted that open brandishing of firearms by youths and criminal elements had once created fear among residents but had since been curtailed.

“Before now, people openly carried firearms and caused panic,” he said. “Since 2023, that practice has stopped, and it will never return to Delta State.”

He warned that the state government would not condone any form of insecurity, insisting that offenders must face the full weight of the law.

“We will not tolerate insecurity in this state,” Oborevwori declared. “Anyone caught with firearms or attempting to breach the peace must be arrested and prosecuted.”

The governor also commended senior officers of the Delta State Police Command for their professionalism and commitment, singling out ACP Aliyu Shaba and the former Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations for their roles in tackling gun-related violence in previously volatile areas.

Calling on residents to support security agencies, Oborevwori emphasized that security is a shared responsibility.

“Peace gives room for development,” he said. “Without peace, investors will not come. That is why Delta State remains open for business.”

In his response, CP Aina Adesola thanked the governor for the warm reception and assured him of the command’s readiness to maintain peace and security across the state.

“Under my leadership, residents of Delta State will continue to sleep with their two eyes closed,” Adesola said. “We are committed to working tirelessly to sustain peace and protect lives and property.”
