Oborevwori Applauds Navy’s Vital Contribution to National Security, Economic Stability

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has lauded the Nigerian Navy for its pivotal role in safeguarding the nation’s maritime assets, describing the service as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s security architecture and economic wellbeing.

The Governor gave the commendation on Monday in Asaba when he hosted the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, who was in the state as part of his familiarisation and operational tour of naval formations in Delta.

Oborevwori said the courtesy visit underscored the Navy’s resolve to fortify security in the Niger Delta, particularly in Delta State, which he noted remains a major contributor to the country’s oil and gas output.

“Your presence here shows commitment and affection for our state,” the Governor said. “Delta is one of the highest oil-producing states, and the Nigerian Navy has continued to play a critical role in securing our maritime environment and protecting strategic national assets.”

He commended the Navy for its anti-piracy operations, support for peacekeeping efforts, and strong collaboration with other security agencies operating in the state, noting that such synergy had sustained relative peace across Delta.

According to him, the serene atmosphere in the state has enabled his administration to pursue major infrastructure projects, including extensive flyovers and major road networks such as the ongoing development of the Ughelli–Asaba expressway.

Reiterating the state government’s commitment to partnering with the Navy, Oborevwori said the protection of oil installations and coastal communities remains a shared priority.

“Our oil assets are well-secured because we all work together. Delta holds a strategic position—any disturbance here reverberates across the country. We appreciate the Navy’s unwavering support,” he stated.

Earlier, Vice Admiral Abbas said his visit was aimed at assessing the operational capacity of naval units in the state, identifying gaps, and reinforcing strategies for safeguarding critical oil and gas assets. He recalled his previous posting to the Central Naval Command, describing Delta as a familiar operational environment.

“The goal is to acquaint myself with ongoing activities in our formations,” he explained. “Delta State hosts significant oil and gas infrastructure, and ensuring their security is paramount.”

The Naval Chief also thanked the Governor for the continuous backing extended to naval operations, noting that enhanced stability in the waterways had contributed to improved national oil output.

“I noticed new developments at the base, and I appreciate your administration’s support. We look forward to sustained cooperation to ensure smooth and effective operations,” he added.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to stronger collaboration toward deepening security and advancing Nigeria’s economic interests.
