The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has announced the suspension of its nationwide strike following an agreement reached with Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals management.
The strike, which lasted two days, led to the closure of several fuel stations across the country. It was triggered by allegations that the Dangote Group had denied its employees the right to join recognized labor unions.
A conciliation meeting convened by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, was held in Abuja on Tuesday. After lengthy discussions, both parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) addressing the contentious issue of workers’ unionization.
The MoU states that unionization is a right under existing laws and that the management of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals has agreed to allow employees willing to join unions to do so. The process of unionization is to commence immediately and be completed within two weeks, from September 9 to September 22, 2025. It was also agreed that the employer will not establish any other union.
The agreement further guarantees that no worker or employee of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals will be victimized due to the strike or the unionization process.
With the signing of this MoU, NUPENG has suspended its industrial action, signaling a positive step towards resolving labor disputes within the company.
