National Grid Collapses, Power Outage Looms

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has confirmed a national grid collapse, resulting in widespread power outages within its franchise areas. In a public notice dated September 10, 2025, published on its official X handle, AEDC reported that the outage began at 11:23 a.m. due to a loss of supply from the national grid.

The statement informed the public: “Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 am today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas.” AEDC assured consumers that efforts are underway to restore power, stating, “Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilised.”

The company requested patience and understanding from the public while promising continuous updates. For inquiries, customers can contact AEDC via phone at 08039070070 or WhatsApp numbers 08152141414, 08152151515.

This latest grid collapse adds to a troubling trend, with the national electricity grid having collapsed 12 times in 2024 alone, and over 100 times in the past decade. Nigerians have faced frequent blackout episodes, including a major collapse in February 2025.

In response to the persistent power outages and instability, six firms alongside one private university were granted the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) approval in April 2025 to generate and distribute electricity, creating alternative sources of power supply.

However, in a report released in July 2025, NERC controversially stated there had been no power system collapse or disturbance in the first quarter of 2025. The report declared, “There was no incidence of system disturbance on the national grid in 2025/Q1,” a claim now contradicted by ongoing outages.

The national grid collapse continues to raise concerns about Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure and the urgent need for sustainable solutions. Power restoration efforts are currently ongoing.
