The Federal Government has directed the immediate shutdown of 41 Federal Unity Colleges amid escalating incidents of student abductions across the country.
The directive was contained in an internal memo signed by Binta Abdulkadir, Director of Senior Secondary Education at the Federal Ministry of Education. According to the circular, the move is a precautionary measure aimed at preventing further security breaches in vulnerable institutions.
“In view of the recent security concerns in parts of the country and the urgent need to forestall any threats, the Honourable Minister of Education has authorised the temporary closure of the following Federal Unity Colleges,” the notice stated. Principals of the affected schools were instructed to implement the order without delay.
The development follows the abduction of 25 students in Maga, Kebbi State earlier in the week—a tragedy that has intensified anxiety over the safety of schools, especially in northern communities.
Similarly, more than 50 schools were shut down on Thursday across Kwara State after bandits attacked communities in the region.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has cancelled planned official trips to South Africa and Angola, opting instead to oversee the government’s security response as pressure mounts for decisive action.
