The Chairman-designate of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has refuted claims that he served on the legal team of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 Presidential Election Petitions Court (PEPC) proceedings.
Appearing before the Senate for his screening on Thursday, Prof. Amupitan clarified that he neither appeared before the Presidential Election Tribunal nor the Supreme Court in connection with the 2023 election cases.
“I never appeared in the presidential election tribunal or at the Supreme Court,” the 58-year-old law scholar firmly stated.
To substantiate his position, the INEC nominee presented certified true copies (CTCs) of the list of counsels who represented parties in the election petition cases.
Prof. Amupitan also dismissed suggestions that he worked for any other presidential candidate, including those of the Labour Party or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“I was not part of it,” he maintained, emphasizing his neutrality and professional independence throughout the election litigation process.
The professor’s clarification comes amid public scrutiny over his nomination and alleged political affiliations as the Senate continues its confirmation process for his appointment.
