DTHA Oversight: Assembly Committee Warns LG Councils Against Procurement Law Violation

The Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has cautioned local government councils in the state on the need to strictly adhere to the provisions of the Public Procurement Law.

Chairman of the committee, Hon Chukwudi Dafe, gave the warning during an interactive session with officials of the Delta State Public Procurement Commission, DSPPC.

The meeting, held at Committee Room 2, State Assembly’s Complex in Asaba was part of the oversight functions of the Committee in line with the provisions of the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria as altered.

Hon Dafe explained that focused is to ensuring transparency, accountability, and due process in the administration of local councils.

Flanked by some members of the committee, including Hon Ferguson Onwo, Emmanuel Sinebe, Isaac Anwuzia and Austin Uroye, the Lawmaker emphasized that compliance with the procurement law was crucial to promoting good governance and curbing financial irregularities in the management of public resources.

He assured that the Delta State Assembly, through its oversight mandate, would continue to monitor the activities of local councils to ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.

Also speaking, Hon. Ferguson Onwo explained that ignorance of the law is not an excuse, adding that due process must be followed in the procurement process at all stages.

In his reaction, Chairman of the Public procurement Commission, Mr David Igbodo commended the Lawmakers for their robust deliberation and promised to work out modalities with the 25 local government councils so as to enforce compliance with the existing law.

The meeting also provided a platform for engagement between the lawmakers and the Commission, with both parties reaffirming their commitment to strengthening accountability mechanisms in governance.
