The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of several officers who were captured in a viral video counting large bundles of cash inside a police patrol vehicle.
The video, which quickly spread across social media platforms, shows the officers seated in a patrol van marked Area Command Asaba, visibly handling what appeared to be significant amounts of money.
The footage sparked outrage and widespread speculation among Nigerians, with many suggesting the money could be the proceeds of extortion or other corrupt practices.
In response to public concern, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Command, DSP Bright Edafe, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday to confirm the arrest. He stated that the command acted swiftly upon seeing the video, tracking down the officers involved and placing them in custody.
“The policemen in the embarrassing video have been identified and arrested,” Edafe wrote. “They were immediately summoned before the Commissioner of Police for questioning.”
While the exact source of the money remains under investigation, the Delta State Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to transparency and accountability within the force. It also reiterated that misconduct among officers will not be tolerated.
The incident has reignited discussions about police ethics and the ongoing need for reform within the Nigerian Police Force. Many Nigerians have called for a full investigation into the matter, demanding that disciplinary action be taken if the officers are found guilty of wrongdoing.
