The Delta State Government on Tuesday commissioned a new cluster of housing units and supporting infrastructure in Okuama, Ughelli South Local Government Area, marking a significant step in the state’s pledge to rebuild the community destroyed in March 2024 following the killing of 17 soldiers.
The commissioning ceremony, seen by many as the turning point in Okuama’s long road to recovery, symbolizes the restoration of hope for residents who were displaced in the aftermath of the incident.
Representing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori at the event, Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme described the project as a “moment of renewal” for the traumatised community.
“My beloved people of Okuama, this is not just a ceremony—it is a moment when we turn the page from pain to possibility,” he said. “We cannot erase the difficult experiences that led to the displacement of families, but in the face of adversity, we have chosen the path of rebuilding, reconciliation, and collective rebirth.”
Onyeme stressed that the resettlement centre was conceived as more than a physical structure, but as a foundation upon which displaced families can rebuild their lives. He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to its MORE Agenda, noting that the project reflects government’s resolve to restore dignity and rebuild trust in affected communities.
He charged residents to embrace peace and unity as they settle into the new facility. “Government has played its part. The future now depends on your collective resolve to sustain peace, protect these facilities, and nurture unity,” he added.
The Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government Council, Hon. Lucky Avweromre, disclosed that the resettlement centre was constructed by the council. He commended Governor Oborevwori for complementing the effort with new primary and secondary school buildings, as well as a primary healthcare centre for the community.
In a joint address, Okuama community representatives, Mr. Okrika Emmanuel and Comrade Akemor Victor, expressed gratitude to the state government for intervening at their darkest moment.
“What happened to us on March 14, 2024, was a shock we had never experienced,” they said. “But for your intervention, the situation would have been worse. We believe in your leadership and we pledge to work for peace in our environment because you are a man of peace.”
The newly commissioned facility includes 40 room spaces, two blocks containing 20 toilets and bathrooms, a solar-powered water reticulation system, and a paved, roofed walkway linking all structures.
