Former Speaker says state’s enormous natural and fiscal endowments must translate into better living conditions
Former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and Delta North senatorial candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, has called for renewed commitment towards transforming Delta State’s enormous human, natural and fiscal resources into tangible prosperity for the people.
Ochei, in a message marking the 35th anniversary of the creation of Delta State, said the occasion should go beyond celebration to provide an opportunity for honest reflection on the state’s development journey since 1991.
According to him, despite its abundant natural resources, significant revenues and enormous human capital, the full benefits of these advantages are yet to sufficiently reflect in the everyday lives of the people.
“Thirty-five years after creation, Delta has undoubtedly made progress, but our enormous potential tells us that we can achieve much more. The next chapter must be about converting our resources into results and our potential into shared prosperity,” Ochei said.
He particularly challenged the people and leadership of Delta North to embrace a new development philosophy anchored on stronger institutions, quality education, productive employment, modern infrastructure and sustainable economic opportunities.
Ochei argued that development should ultimately be measured by its impact on ordinary citizens rather than merely by government expenditure or the number of projects announced.
“Our young people deserve opportunities to develop their talents and fulfil their aspirations. Our communities deserve infrastructure that works, while our people deserve an economy that rewards enterprise and hard work,” he stated.
The former Speaker maintained that Delta’s next phase of development must focus on empowering citizens to become productive and self-reliant rather than perpetually dependent on political patronage.
He congratulated Deltans at home and in the diaspora on the anniversary, expressing confidence that the state’s greatest possibilities still lie ahead.
“At 35, we have come a long way, but the journey is far from complete. This must be a time for renewed vision, stronger institutions and greater opportunities for our people.
“Our resources must become prosperity. Our potential must become opportunity. And governance must ultimately improve the lives of our people.”
Ochei added that building a stronger Delta North would contribute significantly towards achieving a more prosperous, inclusive and economically vibrant Delta State.
