APC Condemns Makinde’s Remarks, Accuses Oyo Governor of Inciting Violence

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly condemned comments allegedly made by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, accusing him of inciting violence and making statements capable of threatening national peace and security.

In a press statement issued on Sunday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the APC said Governor Makinde’s reference to the historical “Operation Wetie” during an opposition summit in Ibadan was reckless and dangerous.

The ruling party described the remarks as a “clear and present threat” to democratic stability, stressing that it was disturbing for a sitting governor and chief security officer of a state to invoke memories of political violence. It urged relevant security and intelligence agencies to closely monitor the situation and take necessary steps to protect lives and property.

The APC further stated that constitutional immunity should not shield public office holders from accountability where issues of national security are concerned. According to the party, no individual, regardless of status, should be allowed to endanger the country’s democratic order under the guise of political commentary.

Beyond the criticism of Makinde, the APC also dismissed claims that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state. The party argued that opposition parties were facing internal crises caused by poor leadership, factional disputes, disregard for due process, and personal ambitions of their leaders.

The statement singled out opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, blaming them for weakening their respective political platforms. It also criticized attempts to form coalitions ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing them as lacking clear direction or policy alternatives.

Reaffirming confidence in its electoral prospects, the APC said Nigerians would reject what it called “fear mongering” and “gangster antics” by opposition leaders. The party maintained that under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it remains committed to strengthening democratic institutions, upholding the rule of law, and delivering on the Renewed Hope Agenda.
