Rivers APC Rejects Impeachment Move Against Fubara, Warns Assembly Against Destabilisation

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly opposed ongoing moves by the State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, describing the process as untenable and capable of destabilising the state.

The party’s reaction follows the formal commencement of impeachment proceedings by the Rivers State House of Assembly, during which Speaker Martins Amaewhule reportedly described Governor Fubara as a “mistake” and accused him of gross misconduct, including issues linked to the 2026 budget.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the APC State Publicity Secretary, Darlington Nwauju, the party said it was alarmed by what it termed “unfortunate developments” emanating from the Assembly.

While acknowledging the constitutional independence of the legislature and its role in checks and balances, the APC said it could not remain silent in the face of what it described as politically motivated actions.

“Our position as at today on this matter is that we solemnly reject the resort to an impeachment process against our Governor and his deputy,” the statement said.

The party warned against allowing internal disputes originating from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to spill over and undermine the APC-led government in Rivers State.

Addressing claims that the impeachment threat was based on budgetary issues, the APC recalled that during the period of emergency rule, a one-year budget of ₦1.485 trillion was transmitted to the National Assembly by the President in May 2025 and duly approved by both chambers of the National Assembly by July 2025. According to the party, the budget is valid until August 2026.

The APC further noted that the governor is not constitutionally compelled to present a supplementary budget if satisfied with the existing one, adding that the constitution allows governors a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year.

“We strongly advise all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, especially APC members, to resist pressures from outside the Assembly chambers to destabilise the Government of Rivers State ably led by His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara,” the party stated.

Reaffirming its commitment to internal cohesion, the APC warned that it would take all necessary steps to prevent what it described as “fratricidal disagreements” from undermining governance in the state.

The party called on lawmakers, particularly those elected on the APC platform, to immediately discontinue the impeachment process in the interest of democracy, development, and the image of the party.

“Let our state remain a democracy and not a politicocracy,” the statement concluded.
