Tragedy: Tenant Allegedly Kills Landlord Over ₦1,500 Electricity Bill in Delta Community

A middle-aged man, Mr Lucky Obaze, has been allegedly stabbed to death by one of his tenants following a disagreement over a ₦1,500 electricity bill in Boji-Boji Owa, Ika North-East Local Government Area of Delta State.

The tragic incident, which occurred in the Owa-Oyibu axis of the town, has plunged residents of the community into grief and disbelief.

Reports by Ika Weekly Newspaper identified the suspect simply as Chiboy, said to be an indigene of Calabar, Cross River State. The suspect reportedly lived with his brother, Victor, in a one-room apartment within a compound owned by the late father of the deceased.

Mr Obaze, who lived in the same compound with his wife and six children, was said to have gone to collect the tenant’s electricity bill, a routine payment arrangement among occupants of the compound.

An eyewitness account by one of the deceased’s children, Master Success Lucky, revealed that the discussion over the bill quickly degenerated into an argument.

According to him, after the initial disagreement downstairs, his father returned upstairs to rest, believing the matter had ended. Moments later, the suspect allegedly followed him upstairs armed with a knife.

“I tried to stop him, but he overpowered me and entered the parlour where my father was seated and stabbed him,” the young boy recounted tearfully.

The deceased’s wife, Mrs Helen Obaze, has called on security agencies, the federal government, and human rights groups to ensure that the suspect is apprehended and justice served, noting that her husband’s death has left her with the sole responsibility of caring for their six children.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, said the incident had been reported to the police and investigations were underway.

“The incident is confirmed, and the suspect is currently at large,” he stated.
