The Imo State Police Command has uncovered a child trafficking ring involving a self-acclaimed pastor, who allegedly sold his own newborn baby for ₦900,000.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye, in a statement on Thursday, disclosed that the syndicate tricked the child’s mother, 22-year-old Precious Ochasi from Ohuba in Ohaji, into believing her baby had died at birth.
According to the police, investigations showed that the pastor, 44-year-old Albert Chidumaga, impregnated Ms. Ochasi and later conspired with a nurse identified as Blessing and a trafficking agent, Chioma—both still on the run—to sell the infant.
The baby was allegedly handed over to 58-year-old Rose Isiguzo, who paid ₦900,000, with two other accomplices, Ikechukwu Ezemadu (50) and Orji Moses (46), also implicated.
Acting on credible intelligence and with the support of community youths in Ohaji, the police apprehended the four suspects on September 11.
Okoye confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing nurse and agent, while the suspects in custody will face prosecution for child trafficking and related crimes.
