The 9th edition of the National Youth Games has officially come to a close in Asaba, with Team Lagos emerging as overall champions in a thrilling and historic victory that sent waves of celebration through the Stephen Keshi Stadium.
Team Lagos topped the medals table with an impressive haul of 52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze medals surpassing defending champions and host state, Delta, which finished in second place with 37 gold, 38 silver, and 39 bronze medals. Edo State secured third place with 33 gold, 18 silver, and 28 bronze medals.
In total, 33 states participated in the competition, collectively winning 802 medals: 246 gold, 236 silver, and 320 bronze.
The atmosphere was electric as Team Lagos was declared the overall winner, marking a major milestone in the history of the Games. Lakan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, hailed the victory as “extraordinary” and a “paradigm shift” for youth sports in Nigeria. He credited Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support, which he said played a crucial role in the team’s success.
The triumph not only ends Delta State’s dominance but also signals a new era for Lagos in youth sports development.
