The Bayelsa State Police Command has confirmed a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion at the State Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to a press release issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, the incident occurred at about 6:00 a.m. on February 11, 2026. The Command said the Commissioner of Police, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor, immediately mobilised the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Special Drone Unit and other tactical teams to the scene upon receiving the report.
The police disclosed that on arrival, operatives of the EOD Unit swiftly contained the situation and cordoned off the area to prevent further danger. During a detailed search of the vicinity, another unexploded IED was discovered and successfully rendered safe by the EOD team.
The Command stated that no lives were lost and no property was destroyed as a result of the explosion. One suspect, identified as Pentecost Elijah, a 60-year-old man from Otuan Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, was arrested at the scene in connection with the incident.
Police authorities said the suspect is currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Bayelsa State Police Command assured residents that the situation is under control and normalcy has been restored, urging members of the public to remain calm and go about their lawful business activities.
