The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria has condemned in strong terms the recent wave of terrorist attacks and killings in Plateau State, describing the situation as deeply troubling and unacceptable.
Chairman of the Conference and Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, expressed grave concern over the escalating violence, noting that it has led to significant loss of lives, widespread displacement, and severe emotional trauma among affected communities. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of innocent lives and the suffering inflicted on citizens as a result of these senseless attacks,” he said.
In a statement made available to journalists through his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, Guwor acknowledged the constitutional responsibility of the Federal Government in matters of national security but emphasized that a broader, more inclusive approach is required. “While we recognize the role of the Federal Government, it is imperative that all critical stakeholders rise to the occasion to contain this violence,” he stated.
The Conference Chairman stressed that the protection of lives and dignity of Nigerians must remain paramount, calling for improved synergy between federal and state security agencies. According to him, “The safety and dignity of every Nigerian must be the top priority of government, and this can only be achieved through enhanced coordination and the effective use of local intelligence.”
Guwor further maintained that the welfare and security of citizens are non-negotiable, urging authorities to deploy targeted interventions to mitigate the impact of the crisis. “Strategic and targeted interventions are necessary to cushion the adverse effects of this worrisome situation on affected populations,” he added.
He also extended his heartfelt sympathy to victims of the attacks and called on all stakeholders—including security agencies, government institutions, and community leaders—to unite in restoring peace. “We urge all stakeholders to work collaboratively to restore lasting peace and security in Plateau State,” he said, while reaffirming the Conference’s commitment to supporting legislation that promotes peace, justice, and inclusive governance nationwide.
