Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, on Thursday held a private meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja.
The closed-door meeting, which was confirmed by Mr. Obi in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, has stirred speculations about possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, described the former president as his “very dear elder brother, statesman, and leader,” noting that their discussions were productive and focused on national issues.
“Today in Abuja, I met with my very dear elder brother, statesman, and leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan. We had a fruitful closed-door meeting and discussed the state of our dear nation,” Obi stated.
Although no further details were disclosed about the content of their conversation, the meeting comes amid reports that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is actively courting key political figures including both Jonathan and Obi to form a united front against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next general elections.
Dr. Jonathan, who led Nigeria between 2010 and 2015, continues to play a significant role in regional diplomacy and democratic mediation across Africa. His influence remains strong within Nigeria’s political landscape, and his recent engagements have attracted national attention.
Political observers say the interaction between the two leaders could signal the beginning of strategic alliances or broader consultations on how to tackle the nation’s pressing challenges.
As the political atmosphere gradually heats up ahead of 2027, Thursday’s meeting is likely to remain a subject of interest among stakeholders and analysts alike.
