By Victor Ucheka

It was a solemn gathering yet celebration of life in Boji-Boji Owa, Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State, as the immediate past Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, alongside prominent sons and daughters of Ika Nation, joined family, friends, and well-wishers to bid a final farewell to the late matriarch, Dame Mabel Bamidele Egede, who passed on at the age of 82.

Fondly known as Ezinne, a title that reflects her motherly virtues and deep cultural reverence, the late Dame Egede was laid to rest in her country home after a well-attended funeral service at St. Peter’s Anglican Church.

Delivering his sermon, the Bishop of the Diocese of Ika, Rt. Rev. Godfrey Ekpenisi, reminded the congregation that life is a sacred trust from God, urging Christians to live purposefully and leave enduring legacies. Drawing from Ecclesiastes 9:5–6, he noted:

“Death is not the opposite of life but a continuation of the journey ordained by God. What truly matters is the legacy we leave behind in the hearts of men and in service to God.”

The cleric extolled the virtues of the deceased, describing her as a woman of unwavering faith, compassion, and integrity whose life positively impacted her family and community. He further charged families to remain united, stressing that strong family values are the bedrock of a progressive society.

In an atmosphere filled with emotion and gratitude, the children of the deceased paid glowing tributes to their mother. Speaking shortly after the interment, First Son of the late Matriarch, Dr. Chris Egede described her as

“a pillar of strength, a guiding light, and a woman whose love and wisdom shaped not only her children but everyone privileged to know her.”

Mrs. Bernice Ogbolu added that their mother’s life was a testament to selflessness and devotion, while Engineer Austin Egede noted that her discipline and values would continue to guide generations.

Mr. Roland Egede expressed appreciation to all who stood by the family, saying their support was a reflection of the impact their mother made during her lifetime.

The interment at her residence was marked by heartfelt prayers and final respect, as loved ones bade farewell to a woman widely regarded as a moral compass and community builder.

Dignitaries present at the ceremony included the wife of the former governor, Dame Edith Okowa; member representing Ndokwa/Ukwani Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi; member representing Ika North East in the Delta State House of Assembly, Marylyn Okowa-Daramola; and Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Chiedu Ebie, former principal Secretary to the immediate past Governor, Dr Hilary Ibegbulem, among other top government officials, clergy, and captains of industry.

The reception that followed was a blend of culture, music, and remembrance, as guests were treated to soul-lifting performances by renowned gospel artiste Steve Crown and Ika-born highlife sensation J. Morgan, whose melodies brought comfort and celebration of a life well spent.

As tributes continue to pour in, many agree that the late Dame Mabel Bamidele Egede lived a fulfilled life defined by faith, service, and enduring love; leaving behind a legacy that will resonate for generations to come.
