Oborevwori Inaugurates Six Judges, Urges Integrity to Safeguard Justice System

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Wednesday swore in six newly appointed judges, cautioning that any decline in public trust in the judiciary could undermine peace and stability in society.

Speaking at the ceremony in Asaba, the governor warned that when citizens lose confidence in the justice system, they may resort to self-help, a development he said could lead to disorder and anarchy. He charged the new judges to uphold integrity, fairness and courage in the discharge of their duties.

The judges appointed to the Delta State High Court are Justices Otite Jonah Akpobaro, Jereoma Sam-Oligida, Irene Boeye Ukuli and Otome Benjamin Adamidenyo. Justices Bridget Onome Ojeikere and Stella Ovuorieroro Okah were sworn in as members of the Delta State Customary Court of Appeal.

Oborevwori stressed that democracy thrives only where the judiciary is credible, transparent and independent, adding that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done. According to him, a fearless and impartial judiciary is essential for maintaining public confidence and social harmony.

He explained that the appointments complied strictly with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), following nominations by the Delta State Judicial Service Commission and approval by the National Judicial Council.

Congratulating the judges on their elevation, the governor described their appointments as recognition of their competence and professionalism. He urged them to resist pressures and temptations that could compromise judicial independence, noting that judges are constantly under public scrutiny.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening justice delivery, saying the appointment of additional judges would reduce case backlogs and improve access to justice, especially in rural areas.

He highlighted ongoing reforms, including the construction of judges’ quarters, renovation of courts, digitisation of Delta State laws, and the introduction of virtual court hearings in Asaba and selected correctional centres. He also disclosed plans to deploy automated court recording systems to enhance efficiency.

Oborevwori further announced the launch of the Delta State Criminal Information System, a digital platform designed to improve criminal profiling, case management and offender tracking through biometric data.

Responding on behalf of the new judges, Justice Bridget Onome Ojeikere thanked the governor for his support and pledged that the judges would uphold the rule of law and administer justice without fear or favour.

The event drew senior government officials, legislators, judicial officers and other stakeholders.
