NDC Holds Inaugural NEC Meeting, Ratifies Interim Leadership, Sets Agenda for 2027 Elections

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken a significant step in its early political journey with the successful conduct of its inaugural National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, barely one month after its official registration.

The high-level gathering brought together members of the party’s national leadership, state chairmen, and key stakeholders from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The meeting served as a platform for extensive deliberations on the party’s organisational framework, strategic direction, and preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Addressing participants, the party’s National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, described the meeting as a major success, expressing satisfaction with the turnout and diversity of representation.

“This inaugural NEC session is a resounding success. The impressive turnout and the wide national spread of participants clearly reflect the acceptance of our vision and the diversity that defines our great country,” Dickson said.

He commended party members and supporters for embracing the NDC’s ideals within a short period and urged officials at all levels to intensify grassroots mobilisation efforts.

“All party leaders must immediately begin aggressive grassroots mobilisation, public enlightenment, and membership registration drives as we prepare for critical timelines ahead,” he added.

A key outcome of the meeting was the formal ratification of the party’s interim national leadership. Senator Moses Cleopas was confirmed as the National Chairman, while Mr. Ikenna Alex-Morgan Enekweizu was ratified as the National Secretary. Other NEC members were also approved in a pro-tem capacity pending the conduct of congresses to elect substantive officials.

The NEC further mandated the party’s Working Committee to develop and release a comprehensive timetable for ward, local government, state, and national congresses, culminating in a national convention.

“The Working Committee has been empowered to urgently roll out a timetable for congresses and the national convention, which will usher in substantive leadership across all levels,” the party stated.

Preparations for party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections were also set in motion, signaling the NDC’s early commitment to electoral participation.

In a move to promote inclusivity, the NEC adopted an affirmative action policy aimed at boosting the participation of women, youths, and persons with disabilities in leadership and governance structures.

“We are committed to inclusive governance. Our affirmative action policy is not just a statement of intent; it is a directive that must be fully implemented across all levels of the party,” Dickson emphasised, adding that compliance would be closely monitored.

The party used the occasion to position itself as a viable alternative for Nigerians dissatisfied with the current political landscape, extending an open invitation to individuals seeking a new political platform.

“The NDC stands as a credible and dynamic vehicle for genuine national transformation. We welcome all well-meaning Nigerians who desire a better future for our country,” Dickson said.

He also acknowledged the growing involvement of young Nigerians in the party, noting their active participation in the NEC meeting.

“The energy and enthusiasm of young Nigerians within our party are encouraging. They have begun to take ownership of the NDC’s vision and its future,” he noted.

The successful hosting of the inaugural NEC meeting underscores the NDC’s ambition to rapidly establish itself as a formidable political force ahead of the 2027 elections.

Reaffirming its commitment to democratic values, the party pledged to uphold the principles of justice, equity, and sustainable national development as it continues to expand its national footprint.
