A delegation comprising technical officials from the National Sports Commission, state sports commissions, and various sports federation has completed a comprehensive inspection of facilities in Asaba, Delta State, ahead of the 9th National Youth Games, scheduled to begin on August 26.
The inspection was carried out by three teams who visited several venues to assess their readiness. Among the major facilities inspected were the main track at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, the multipurpose indoor sports halls, and the swimming pool.
Additional venues toured include the Hockey Complex in Okpanam, the Cenotaph which will host volleyball and handball events, and the Government House Squash Court, set to host squash, basketball, tennis, and fives.
Speaking during the inspection, General Manager of the Ekiti State Sports Commission, Lawrence Mayowa Ogundele, expressed satisfaction with the hockey facilities.
“The hockey pitch is of a good standard. Delta State Government has done commendable work, though a few final touches are needed to ensure a successful competition,” he said.
The team also inspected Ibori Golf Course, which will host the golf event, and accommodation centers such as Dennis Osadebe University hostels and the Technical College, Asaba, which will also serve as a rugby venue.
Other locations visited included: Ibusa-Asaba Expressway for the cycling event, Saint Patrick College Hall for boxing, Saint Patrick College field for cricket and football, and AGGS for Abula.
In a related development, the technical committee for the 9th National Youth Games held a preparatory meeting in Asaba. Addressing the session, Director of Grassroots Sports Development at the National Sports Commission, Amaka Asheofu—who represented the Director General—assured stakeholders that efforts are underway to ensure this edition of the Games surpasses previous ones in organization and performance.
The countdown to the 9th National Youth Games has officially begun, with Asaba set to host thousands of young athletes from across the country.
