Just In: ADC Leaders Storm Abuja in #OccupyINEC Protest, Decry Threats to Democracy

Leaders and supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Wednesday staged a large-scale protest in Abuja, voicing strong opposition to actions taken by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which they claim undermine democratic principles and interfere in the party’s internal affairs.

The demonstration, held at Maitama Roundabout and tagged #OccupyINEC, attracted several high-profile political figures, including Rotimi Amaechi, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rauf Aregbesola, Aminu Tambuwal, and Dino Melaye. Hundreds of loyalists from the Kwankwasiyya movement were also present.

In a symbolic show of resistance, protesters sang Nigeria’s former national anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots!”, which was replaced on May 29, 2024, by “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” following a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. ADC leaders described the act as deliberate.

“The decision to sing the old anthem was an act of defiance against what we see as a steady erosion of democratic values,” a party source stated.

Protesters carried placards expressing support for former Senate President David Mark, with messages such as “In David Mark’s NWC we trust.”

Speaking on behalf of the party and allied opposition figures, Peter Obi called on Nigerians to remain vigilant in defending democracy.

“We, members and leaders of the ADC, alongside other well-meaning Nigerians, are saying that our democracy must not be killed,” Obi said in a statement shared on X.

The protest underscores rising political tensions ahead of future elections, as opposition figures continue to challenge electoral decisions and advocate for greater transparency and institutional independence.
