Group Sensitizes DELSU Students on Civic Engagement Ahead of 2027 Elections

By Peter Ogege

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Nigerian youths, particularly those in Delta State, have been urged not to lose hope in the nation’s democracy but to actively participate in the electoral process and promote good governance.

The Convener of Action Youth for Sustainable Development (AYSD), Comrade Edas Joel, made the call during a youth sensitization programme held at the weekend with students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka.

Addressing the students, Comrade Joel emphasized that meaningful political change can only occur when young people deliberately engage in the democratic process and contribute to leadership development.

“Young people must not lose faith in Nigeria’s democracy. If we desire good governance, we must be ready to participate actively in the political process and offer selfless service to society,” he said.

He stressed that leadership opportunities would remain limited for youths if they continue to distance themselves from politics.

“Good governance is a product of good leadership, and good leadership comes when responsible and committed citizens step forward. The youth population must prepare themselves to take up these roles,” Joel added.

The AYSD Convener also urged young people to take advantage of the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and obtain their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs).

“Your PVC is your voice. Without it, you cannot fully participate in deciding who leads at the local, state and national levels,” he noted.

He further encouraged the students to remain focused, hardworking and optimistic about the future of the country.

“Nigeria belongs to you as much as anyone else. Do not give up on the system. There are better days ahead if we collectively play our roles,” he said.

In his remarks, the President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of DELSU, Comrade Kingsley Dumuje, commended the AYSD for organizing the programme, describing it as timely and impactful.

“This initiative has come at the right time when many young people are beginning to question their place in the democratic process. It is important that students are reminded of their civic responsibilities,” Dumuje said.

He assured the group of the students’ willingness to support initiatives that promote civic advocacy, youth inclusion and political awareness.

“We appreciate AYSD for championing the cause of youth inclusion and social literacy. As students, we will continue to support programmes that encourage political participation and social cohesion,” he added.

Also speaking, Comrade Daniel Emuwhovwho and Mr. Okonkwo Collins stressed the need for increased awareness of civic rights among young people, urging them to understand and actively exercise their democratic responsibilities.

On his part, Hon. Frank Oghor highlighted some initiatives of President Bola Tinubu, including the NELFUND student loan scheme, while also acknowledging bursary support provided to students by the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.

The event featured an interactive session on civic engagement, where participants were enlightened on the importance of obtaining a Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) and registering with political parties at their respective wards.

Action Youth for Sustainable Development (AYSD) is a youth-driven movement focused on promoting political socialization, civic advocacy, youth inclusion and social literacy among young Nigerians.
