Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Monday formally joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), leading a major political realignment in the state that included 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly and nine members of the House of Representatives.
The governor announced the defection at a political gathering held at the Coronation Hall of the Government House, Kano, where he said the decision was the outcome of extensive consultations with lawmakers and key stakeholders across the state.
Yusuf noted that 22 of the 24 members of the State House of Assembly and nine of the 14 federal lawmakers from Kano had agreed to move to the APC, describing the step as strategic and people-oriented.
According to him, the defection was motivated by the need to foster cooperation, enhance governance and fast-track development in Kano State.
“Politics should not be about division. Parties are only platforms to achieve meaningful development for our people,” the governor said, urging residents to assess the decision based on performance and impact.
The event attracted top APC figures, including former National Chairman of the party, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje; Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin; and Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Hon. Abubakar Kabiru Bichi.
Reacting to the development, Kano State APC Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, described the defection as historic, assuring Governor Yusuf of the party’s full support.
Similarly, Senator Barau Jibrin called on his supporters to unite behind the governor in the interest of the state’s progress, while Ganduje welcomed Yusuf and the lawmakers, describing the governor as a committed progressive.
The mass defection is widely seen as a major shift that could redefine the balance of political power in Kano State ahead of future electoral contests.
