Easter Tragedy: Fallen Tree Kills Keke Rider, Passenger in Asaba

A tragic incident marred Easter Sunday celebrations in Asaba, Delta State, as a commercial tricycle rider and a passenger lost their lives after a mango tree was uprooted by a strong wind along Okpanam Road.

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred in the evening during a sudden windstorm, which caused the tree to collapse without warning, crushing the victims and leaving residents and passersby in shock.

The unfortunate development has sparked grief and outrage among residents, many of whom described the deaths as avoidable. They called on the Delta State Government and relevant environmental authorities to urgently address the dangers posed by aging roadside trees.

Residents expressed growing concern over the condition of several trees lining Okpanam Road, noting that many appear weak and could pose serious risks to lives and property if not promptly inspected and maintained.

Some community members also pointed to a similar recent incident where a falling tree branch reportedly damaged a vehicle belonging to a former Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Lawrence Ejiofor, further highlighting the recurring danger.

The incident has reignited public debate over the responsibilities of government agencies in charge of environmental management and urban renewal, with calls for proactive measures to prevent future occurrences.

Concerned citizens are now urging authorities to act swiftly by conducting thorough assessments of roadside trees and removing or replacing those deemed hazardous, to avert further tragedies.
