Delta EXCO Approves ₦10 Billion To Clear Outstanding Pension Arrears

…….. Reviews Project Timelines, Terminates Non-Performing Contracts

The Delta State Executive Council (EXCO) has approved the release of ₦10 billion for the payment of pension arrears owed to retirees in the state.

The approval was granted during Thursday’s EXCO meeting held at Government House, Asaba, which was presided over by the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, on behalf of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who is currently on official assignment outside the state.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, said the decision reflects Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to alleviating the hardship faced by pensioners and clearing liabilities inherited from previous administrations.

According to Aniagwu, a special committee has been constituted to oversee the transparent disbursement of the ₦10 billion to eligible beneficiaries.

“This move is in fulfillment of the governor’s promise to our senior citizens who served Delta State diligently. The committee will ensure that the funds reach genuine pensioners without bias or interference,” Aniagwu assured.

The Commissioner, who addressed the press alongside the Commissioners for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Ekedayen; Housing, Hon. Godknows Angele; and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, said the council deliberated on several critical matters spanning infrastructure, governance, and social welfare.

He revealed that the EXCO also reviewed progress on major infrastructure projects, including the Agbor and Ughelli flyovers being constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.

“The timeline for the Agbor flyover at Uromi Junction has been shortened from 24 months to 18 months, while that of Ughelli at Otovwodo Junction has been reduced from 24 to 14 months,” Aniagwu said, adding that the adjustments are designed to accelerate delivery and stimulate economic growth.

The council also examined the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) presented by the Commissioner for Economic Planning as part of preparations for the 2026 fiscal year budget.

In another development, the EXCO terminated several non-performing contracts across the state, citing inefficiency and poor performance by contractors.

“We cannot tolerate delays where government has met its obligations. Some contractors have failed to deliver, and their contracts have been revoked. One of such is the Igbodo Junction–Ubulu-Uku–Ogwashi-Uku Road project, which will be reassessed and re-awarded to a more competent firm,” Aniagwu stated.

He further announced that the council approved the presentation of the Staff of Office to His Royal Majesty, Engr. Mike Oghenovo Orugbo, Okporua I, the Ovie of Udu Kingdom, who was duly installed by the kingdom’s kingmakers.

Aniagwu reaffirmed that the Oborevwori administration remains committed to its MORE Agenda — emphasizing meaningful development, opportunities for all, realistic reforms, and enhanced peace and security.

“Governor Oborevwori has been consistent about accountability and performance. Projects must add value to the lives of Deltans, and any contractor or official who undermines that vision will be held accountable,” he stressed.

The Commissioner assured that the state government will continue to prioritize the welfare of citizens, infrastructural expansion, and institutional reforms geared toward sustainable development and inclusive prosperity.
