Aina Adesola Takes Over as 23rd Commissioner of Police in Delta

The new Commissioner of Police, Delta State Police Command, CP Aina Adesola has formally assumed duty as the 23rd Commissioner of Police in the state, pledging robust, intelligence-driven and community-focused policing.

Adesola succeeds Olufemi Abaniwonda, who was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) and redeployed to the Department of Operations at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

Born on September 2, 1968, CP Adesola hails from Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State. He holds a B.Sc. in Sociology from Ondo State University and joined the Nigeria Police Force on June 10, 1994 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police after training at the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano.

Interestingly, his policing journey has deep roots in Delta State, where he was first posted in 1996 and began service in Ogwashi-Uku. Over the years, he has built a distinguished career spanning operational, investigative, administrative and training roles across several state commands and police formations.

His previous appointments include Divisional Police Officer, Aswani Division; Officer-in-Charge, Homicide, Edo State; Officer-in-Charge, X-Squad, Zone 2, Lagos; Assistant Commissioner of Police (Finance and Administration), Abia State; and Commandant, Police Training School, Oyin-Akoko, Ondo State.

He also served as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Delta State Command, as well as DCP roles at the Force Headquarters and Rivers State Command. After his promotion to Commissioner of Police in 2025, Adesola was posted to the Police College, Ikeja, as Deputy Commandant before his redeployment to Delta State in January 2026.

CP Adesola has undertaken extensive professional training within and outside Nigeria, including leadership, tactical command, mobile policing and community policing programmes, as well as international courses in Botswana and the United States.

Assuming office, the new police chief described security as a collective responsibility and assured residents of a professional, proactive and people-oriented policing approach. He pledged to consolidate existing security structures, enhance crime prevention strategies and make the state increasingly unfriendly to criminal activities.

He also appealed to residents for sustained cooperation with security agencies and urged youths to shun crime and negative influences.

In his farewell remarks, AIG Olufemi Abaniwonda thanked the Delta State Government and residents for their support during his tenure and called for the same cooperation to be extended to his successor.

CP Aina Adesola, who is married with children, is known among colleagues as disciplined, detribalised and community-focused, with interests in reading, travelling and football.
