One of the senatorial candidates seeking to represent Delta North Senatorial District, Rex Biose, appears to be gaining increasing attention among Anioma people as the political contest gathers momentum. His emergence comes at a time when some of his opponents are increasingly engaged in public exchanges over their respective records in office.
The Labour Party candidate, Rex Biose, has repeatedly expressed concern over what he describes as the misrule and injustice allegedly suffered by the Anioma people under the old political order. He has maintained that he is coming with a new approach aimed at changing the narrative and providing the people with a voice for the transformation they have long desired.
That message appears to be resonating with sections of the electorate, particularly as some voters express dissatisfaction with the nature of the campaigns being conducted by other contenders, including candidates of the APC and NDC. Rather than focusing exclusively on policy issues and their respective agendas for the district, some of the candidates have engaged in public exchanges over their past records and leadership credentials.
Some of those who previously held elective positions in the state have, in recent times, traded accusations and counter-accusations relating to their records in office.
Against this backdrop, some Anioma voters are reportedly becoming less interested in such exchanges, with calls growing for a different approach to political leadership and representation.
In a sampling of views from residents and political observers, several respondents expressed the view that Anioma needs what they described as a fresh approach to senatorial leadership. Some criticized what they regarded as the failures of past political leadership, arguing that the consequences have contributed to economic hardship and limited opportunities for ordinary citizens.
Within this emerging conversation, Rex Biose is presenting himself as an alternative to the established political order. Coming from a private-sector background, he has sought to distinguish his candidacy on the basis of his business experience, personal antecedents and promise of a different style of political leadership.
One respondent described his candidacy as representing “a new breed of politician” and argued that Biose’s message appears to be connecting with citizens who are seeking a different kind of leadership.
“It is a victory in advance for Rex Biose, who has presented himself as a new breed of politician, desired and clamoured for by Nigerian citizens. Good enough for him, he is a true Obidient, known and recognised by his antecedents,” the respondent said.
The respondent added: “This is the kind of servant-leader politician that is needed, not politics-made billionaires without substance for leadership.”
As the contest for the Delta North Senate seat progresses, the extent to which Biose’s message translates into broader electoral support will ultimately depend on the choices of voters across the senatorial district.
