The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) Warri Chapel, has honoured the Airport Manager of Osubi Airport, Chief Winston Egwuatu, with an Award of Appreciation and Excellence in recognition of his outstanding support towards enhancing the operations of the state-owned broadcasting station.
Presenting the award, Chairman of the NUJ DBS Warri Chapel, Comrade John Glover, said the honour was in appreciation of the donation of a 10KVA solar power system by the management of Osubi Airport, describing the intervention as timely and impactful. He recalled that the chapel had appealed to the airport management for assistance, and the request was graciously approved.
According to him, “We could not behave like the nine lepers in the Bible who failed to return and give thanks after receiving their healing. This award is our way of expressing sincere appreciation for a gesture that has transformed our station.”
Comrade Glover explained that the solar power installation has significantly improved television transmission, guaranteed uninterrupted power supply and enhanced the quality of news and programme broadcasts.
He disclosed that the improved power situation also enabled DBS Warri to be added to the Free TV satellite platform, thereby expanding the station’s reach to a wider audience. “The donation has restored staff confidence, boosted morale and positioned the station for more efficient service delivery,” he said.
The NUJ chairman also briefed the airport management on the chapel’s forthcoming Peace Walk to commemorate the International Day of Peace, an initiative aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence in Warri and its environs. He appealed for the continued support of Osubi Airport, expressing optimism that the existing partnership would continue to flourish for the benefit of the community.
Also speaking, the Delta State Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Comrade Sonia Unobujor, commended Osubi Airport for its corporate social responsibility. She assured that journalists in the state would continue to highlight the airport’s positive contributions.
“We deeply appreciate this noble gesture and will continue to project the good works of Osubi Airport as a worthy partner in community development,” she stated.
Responding on behalf of the Airport Manager, the Head of Operations, Osubi Airport, Comrade Victor Ifemkwe, conveyed the appreciation of Chief Winston Egwuatu for the recognition.
He described the award as a motivation to do more, noting that the solar power project formed part of the airport’s corporate social responsibility. “We are delighted that our support has strengthened the operations of DBS Warri.
This recognition encourages us to sustain our partnership with the media and continue contributing to initiatives that positively impact society,” he said. He also urged other corporate organisations to support the smooth operations of Delta Broadcasting Service Warri.
The ceremony reached its climax with the formal presentation of the Award of Appreciation and Excellence to Chief Winston Egwuatu by the Chairman of NUJ DBS Warri Chapel, Comrade John Glover, amid applause from journalists and airport officials, underscoring the value of collaboration between the media and corporate organisations in advancing public service.
