The curtain has fallen on the 47th Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Senior Open Tennis Championship after a week-long showcase of exceptional talent, skill, and sportsmanship from some of the nation’s finest tennis players.
As the championship concluded, President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, described the tournament as a resounding success, commending the players for their outstanding performances and exemplary conduct throughout the competition.
Ochei congratulated the winners and praised all participants for their commitment, discipline, and competitive spirit.
“The championship has once again demonstrated the immense talent that exists within Nigerian tennis. I congratulate all the winners and commend every player who participated for their sportsmanship and determination. For those who emerged victorious, this should inspire them to aim even higher, while those who fell short should remain focused and work harder towards future successes,” he said.
The NTF President reiterated the Federation’s commitment to the growth of tennis in Nigeria, assuring players of sustained support, improved exposure, and opportunities capable of elevating them to global prominence.
According to him, the Federation remains determined to create an enabling environment that will allow Nigerian tennis players to compete favourably with their counterparts across the world.
In the Men’s Singles final, reigning Nigerian champion Canice Abua delivered a dominant performance to defeat former champion Michael Emmanuel 6-1, 6-2 and claim the prestigious title.
The Women’s Singles crown went to Itoro Bassey, who staged a remarkable comeback to overcome Success Ogunjobi 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
In the Women’s Doubles event, Khadijat Mohammed and Success Ogunjobi emerged champions after an impressive campaign, while the Men’s Doubles title was secured by the pair of Musa Mohammed and Canice Abua.
The Wheelchair Tennis category also produced exciting contests, with Usor Andrea of Edo State claiming the women’s title. In the men’s event, defending champion Alex Adewale successfully retained his crown to reaffirm his dominance in the category.
With the successful conclusion of the CBN Senior Open Tennis Championship, attention now shifts to the DavNotch Open Tennis Championship, which is expected to continue the momentum and provide another platform for Nigerian players to showcase their talents.
The 47th CBN Senior Open Tennis Championship further underscored the growing standard of tennis in Nigeria and the Nigeria Tennis Federation’s commitment to developing the sport across the country.
