Oborevwori Commissions CNG Station in Delta, Promises Transport Cost Relief

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has commissioned a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station established by NIPCO Gas Limited in Asaba, describing it as a strategic move to cushion the effects of rising transportation costs.

The governor, who was represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Kingsley Emu, said the facility would provide residents with a viable alternative to petrol.

“The launch of this CNG station offers our people an alternative means of fueling their vehicles and reduces dependence on petrol,” he said.

Oborevwori explained that the initiative became necessary following the removal of fuel subsidy, which triggered a sharp increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

“We are committed to creating an enabling environment for partnerships and investments, particularly in expanding CNG infrastructure and conversion facilities across the state,” he added.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Transport, Onoriode Agofure, described the project as transformative for the state’s transport sector.

“This is a game-changer. CNG provides a more affordable and efficient alternative to PMS, making it highly beneficial for both individuals and businesses,” Agofure stated.

He clarified that the project is not a pilot phase but the beginning of a broader rollout aligned with the Federal Government’s CNG policy.

Meanwhile, the Projects Manager of NIPCO Gas Limited, Victor Attah, said the stations in Asaba and Warri have the capacity to serve over 2,000 motorists and tricycle operators daily.

“We appreciate the Delta State Government for this collaboration and remain committed to expanding CNG infrastructure to other parts of the state,” Attach said.

The event concluded with the formal commissioning of the station and a live demonstration of gas dispensing for vehicles.
