Former Delta State Governor, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, has strongly condemned the alleged assault incident linked to a festival in Ozoro, describing the situation as disturbing while dismissing claims that such practices are rooted in Urhobo or Isoko culture.
In a statement on his verified Facebook page, Ibori while addressing the controversy, said he was shocked when he first heard reports of the incident, noting that in all his years living in Urhobo land — including his eight-year tenure as governor — he had never encountered any festival of such nature.
“I initially doubted the reports and sought to verify the facts,” he said, emphasizing that violence, particularly against vulnerable individuals, must be condemned by all.
Following his inquiries, Ibori disclosed that information obtained from the traditional institution in Ozoro indicated that the appropriate custodians of culture were not consulted before the alleged event took place. He stressed that it would be unfair to attribute the reported acts to the entire Isoko ethnic group or implicate the Urhobo people.
The former governor also refuted claims circulating on social media that linked the Ekene festival to acts of sexual violence, describing such assertions as false and misleading.
According to him, festivals in both Urhobo and Isoko traditions are deeply rooted in history, spirituality, and moral values, serving as avenues to celebrate heritage and reinforce societal norms.
“What happened is condemnable,” Ibori stated, while commending security agencies for stepping in to investigate the matter. He expressed confidence that ongoing investigations would clarify the situation and reaffirm that no such “rape festival” exists in either Urhobo or Isoko culture.
He further revealed plans to collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including the university authorities and the Ozoro traditional institution, to engage young people and prevent actions that undermine cultural values and the dignity of women.
The Ozoro incident has sparked widespread concern and debate, with calls for justice and clarity continuing as investigations unfold.
