Just In: Four Rivers Assembly Lawmakers Make U-Turn, Uphold Fubara’s Impeachment

Four members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who earlier pulled out of the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara have reversed their stance, declaring renewed support for the proceedings.

The lawmakers announced their decision on Friday during a live broadcast monitored by Pathway News, days after appealing for dialogue and a peaceful resolution to the political crisis in the state.

Their latest move comes amid heightened tension within the Assembly over the ongoing impeachment process targeting Governor Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

Recall that the House, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, last week initiated impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy, citing allegations of gross misconduct. Among the allegations are the demolition of the Assembly complex and the alleged expenditure of public funds without legislative approval.

Earlier in the week, between Monday and Wednesday, the four lawmakers had publicly announced their withdrawal from the process, stressing the need for reconciliation and political dialogue.

However, members of the Assembly on Friday maintained that the impeachment exercise would proceed, describing it as constitutional and the appropriate path to resolving the state’s political impasse.

The renewed commitment followed the Assembly’s inability to reconvene for plenary on Thursday, one week after adjourning its last sitting, a development that had fueled speculation of internal divisions among lawmakers.

With the reversal by the four legislators, momentum appears to have returned to the impeachment process, strengthening the Assembly’s resolve to push forward with the proceedings.
