Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared that Nigerians should not hesitate to seek international support to confront the country’s deepening insecurity, stressing that the scale of killings across religious, ethnic, and political lines demands urgent action.
Speaking on Friday night at the Plateau Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival in Jos, Obasanjo lamented the persistent loss of lives and urged the federal government to adopt advanced security technology capable of tracking criminals without fail.
“With the technology available today, no offender should be able to hide,” he said. “Before I left office, we already had the capacity to locate anyone in Nigeria once properly identified. Every Nigerian life is important—Christian, Muslim, or otherwise. The killings must stop.”
The former president maintained that international collaboration is both justified and necessary where domestic efforts fall short, adding that safeguarding citizens should remain the country’s foremost priority.
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who also addressed the audience, expressed optimism that Nigeria would eventually overcome its security and economic setbacks. He prayed for continued divine guidance for leaders at all levels, declaring, “By the grace of God, those who want Nigeria destroyed will not succeed.”
Mutfwang said the annual carol event was established to strengthen harmony among Plateau’s multi-ethnic communities through worship and thanksgiving. Despite national hardships, he added, the celebration reflects gratitude for “the goodness of God in the land of the living.”
